Democrats Say E-Cigs Target Kids, Urge Quick Legislation
A group of Democrats in the House of Representatives is calling for new rules regarding cigars and electronic cigarettes, accusing electronic cigarette manufacturers of targeting children with “kid-friendly flavors.”
“Manufacturers of e-cigarettes are taking advantage of this regulatory loophole to target children. As a result, some e-cigarette makers are producing products with kid-friendly flavors such as ‘Cherry Crush’ and ‘Cookies & Cream Milkshake.’”
–Waxman, DeGette, Pallone & Dingell
In a letter to the FDA Monday, the group, which includes Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), Diane DeGette (D-CO), Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and John Dingell (D-MI), urged the Obama Administration to act immediately, stating that “with over a million youth now using e-cigarettes, FDA needs to act without further delay to protect public health.”
A separate letter from the group of representatives was sent to the Energy and Commerce Committee, of which Waxman is a member, urging them to hold a hearing on the health risks associated with tobacco, and the FDA’s power to impose restrictions.
Rules have been under development by the FDA for several years, with an announcement expected next month. We can’t help wondering if these letters are being sent now so that these Representatives can try to take credit for it when it happens.
