New Taxes May Boost E-Cigs

A new cigarette tax goes into effect in Minnesota next week that may increase the popularity of electronic cigarettes in that state.

The new tax will increase cigarette prices by quite a large amount: $1.60 per pack.

“It’s not just replacing cigarettes. It becomes more of a hobby because you can really customize your experience when using electronic cigarettes.”
-Sina War, Uptown Vapor Shoppe

Vape store owners seem to be optimistic, since the tax does not apply to electronic cigarettes, and they hope that the increased price of cigarettes will make the electronic alternative more attractive to those looking to save some money without having to go cold turkey.

In their coverage of this story, the Star Tribune interviews owners of local stores Uptown Vapor Shoppe and Smokeless Smoking, both of which have recently expanded operations, or plan to expand soon. It seems that this blow against Big Tobacco may be giving a large boost to smaller Minnesota vape stores.
