Philippine Doctor: E-Cigs Worse Than Smoking
Another day, another misleading attack on electronic cigarettes from the Philippines.
This time, it’s the Inquirer (not to be confused with the National Enquirer, though the journalistic quality isn’t any better). In an article posted Friday, Dr. Raphael Castillo warns of the dangers of electronic cigarettes in a laundry list of unsubstantiated rumors, scare tactics, and outright lies.
“We won’t be surprised if later studies … show that e-cigs can cause all known complications of tobacco smoking in a shorter period of time.”
How this man can call himself a doctor is a mystery to us. Of all the implications in his attack piece, perhaps the most befuddling is his claim that electronic cigarettes hold the potential to cause all of the problems of tobacco smoking in a shorter amount of time. This flies in the face of all research done to date, which show not only that e-cigarettes clearly have none of the short-term health effects of tobacco smoking, but that they are completely incapable of causing many of tobacco’s problems due to the lack of combustion.
Castillo also says that e-cigarettes users “don’t realize they’re getting a higher dose of nicotine,” another claim that is patently false, as has been proven by multiple studies.
If dark days are ahead for vaping in the Philippines, it will be because health “experts” such as doctor Castillo are not above lying to the public, and their patients, to push their agendas. We find it unlikely that Castillo is ignorant about the truth of e-cigarettes, and is aware that he is lying through his teeth. We can only hope whatever compensation he’s receiving for selling his integrity is worth it.
